“What we love others will love and we will show them how” - Author Unknown

The Denver Group’s Backpacking School (BKPS) is open to all CMC members regardless of hiking classification. It is designed for those looking to expand their outdoor activities beyond daytrips. This school focuses on the fundamental skills, gear and techniques used in modern backpacking and mountaineering. We teach in fun and informal settings with others having similar interests. Our hope is that you will take these skills to build a safe and enjoyable lifetime of memories showing others how to use and protect our mountain environment.

Denver CMC offers two entry-level courses, the Backpacking School (BKPS) and Wilderness Trekking School (WTS).  Both share a common core curriculum: what to carry with you, what to wear, what to eat, map and compass skills, basic first aid and survival skills, weather awareness, avalanche awareness and winter travel skills (snow shoes and ice ax).  WTS is appropriate for members primarily interested in day trips into the mountains.  BKPS is appropriate for members who are also interested in learning skills appropriate for overnight or multi-day trips, covering additional skills including cooking, camp craft and appropriate equipment.
